Growth Marketing

Zero-click isn't the problem. It's the new channel.

On what it means to win visibility when most searches end without a click, and why the metrics you've been using no longer describe what's actually happening.

TL;DR

68% of Google searches now end without a click, and it's not killing the funnel — it's filtering it. Brands cited in AI Overviews build awareness and higher-converting direct traffic even without a click. The click lost its monopoly on what counts as marketing impact.

Independent publishers filed an antitrust complaint in the EU against Google's AI Overviews, arguing the feature diverts traffic and revenue. Google responded by explaining that AI Overviews create discovery opportunities and send billions of clicks to websites. Both are right. And the disagreement between the two describes exactly the tension marketing teams are operating inside of in 2026.

The click as the unit of value didn't disappear. But it stopped being the only unit that matters.

What the 2026 numbers say

In the first four months of 2026, 68.01% of Google searches in the US ended without a click to any external site, according to SparkToro and Similarweb, published in June 2026. That's an increase of 7.56 percentage points since 2024, when the number was 60.45%.

For queries that trigger AI Overviews, Similarweb reports an 83% zero-click rate. In Google's AI Mode, that number reaches 93% according to Semrush. And according to internal Google data cited by Search Engine Land, only 17% of users click the source link inside an AI Overview.

The same SparkToro study found that the share of searches ending in another search within Google rose 7.2 percentage points between 2024 and 2026. More searches, fewer clicks out. Google is getting users to search more within its own ecosystem while sending them outward less.

But there's a nuance the aggregate numbers hide, and it's the real argument of this article.

Some companies report a drop in organic traffic alongside a rise in revenue. The explanation is structural: zero-click visibility builds brand awareness that generates direct visits and branded searches that convert at higher rates. The traffic losses come from low-intent informational queries. The gains come from high-intent users who already know the brand.

Zero-click isn't destroying the funnel. It's filtering out low-intent traffic and concentrating the high-intent kind.

What zero-click marketing actually is

There's a confusion worth clearing up before talking strategy.

A brand that appears cited in an AI Overview, in a Featured Snippet, in a Perplexity answer, or in Google's Knowledge Panel is generating a brand impression with real value even without a click. A 2026 study showed that brands cited in AI Overviews receive more organic clicks than brands that don't appear at all. AI citation functions as a trust signal: the user sees the brand recommended by the model and is more likely to search for it directly afterward.

Presence on the SERP becomes a marketing channel in its own right. Not a traffic channel. An awareness channel.

Where the influence happens now

In its June 2026 analysis, Similarweb identifies what it calls "overachievers": brands that rank significantly higher in AI visibility than their branded search demand would suggest. The consistent explanation is content organized to answer questions clearly, categorically, and in depth — content that earns AI citation regardless of domain authority or brand size.

That's a real opening for brands that don't have the budget or the domain authority to compete in traditional SEO. The game shifted from scale to specificity.

According to Semrush Sensor Q1 2026, AI Overviews appear in 30% of all informational queries in the US and Western Europe. 62% of the sources cited in those AI Overviews don't come from pages in the organic top 3. Ranking first on Google and getting cited in AI are two different games with two different logics. And for the first time, the second one is more open to brands that don't dominate the first.

And there's a level beyond that Similarweb names with precision: agentic search means the human doesn't search at all. They delegated the task to an AI agent that searched, researched, compared, and in some cases transacted on their behalf. Zero-click where the human searches without clicking is already the norm. Zero-click where the human doesn't even open Google is arriving with the Information Agents Google introduced at I/O in May 2026.

How to build presence in a zero-click environment

In an analysis of more than 400 websites, researcher Cyrus Shepard identified the five characteristics most correlated with year-over-year traffic growth in 2026. Strong brand correlates at 0.206. Structured, specific, citable content consistently outperforms broad awareness content in AI citation, regardless of domain authority.

What that means in practice: content that answers specific questions with traceable data and original perspective is more likely to appear in AI responses than broad thought-leadership content without a factual anchor. Specificity is the new authority.

There are three signals Ahrefs and Semrush consistently identified as correlated with AI Overview citation in 2026: content updated within the last two months, clear structure with headings that mirror conversational queries, and external citations to verifiable sources. None of the three require significant budget. All three require editorial judgment about what to publish and how to structure it.

What to stop measuring, and what to start

The most concrete tension for any marketing team today is this: the metrics used to evaluate content performance — pageviews, organic sessions, CTR — were designed for a world where the click was the unit of value. Those metrics don't capture the impact of appearing cited across three AI Overviews before a buyer has visited a single site.

Brands adapting their metrics are starting to measure brand impressions on SERP features, share of voice in AI search, branded search volume as a proxy signal for awareness, and direct traffic as an indicator of accumulated recognition. None of these metrics replace conversion. All of them describe the state of the funnel more accurately in an environment where influence happens before the click.

The click didn't die. It lost its monopoly over what counts as impact. And the teams that understood this first aren't waiting for traffic to come back. They're building presence where the buyer already is.

Frequently asked questions

What is zero-click search?

Zero-click search is when a user's query is answered directly on the search results page or inside an AI Overview, so they never click through to a website. 68.01% of Google searches in the US ended without an external click in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024.

Does zero-click search mean SEO no longer matters?

No — it means the click stopped being the only unit of value. Brands cited in AI Overviews and Featured Snippets generate a brand impression that builds awareness and drives higher-converting direct and branded search traffic, even without a click.

What is agentic search?

Agentic search is when a human delegates a search task entirely to an AI agent, which searches, compares, and sometimes transacts on their behalf, so the human never opens a search engine at all — the stage past zero-click.

What metrics should replace clicks and pageviews?

Brand impressions on SERP features, share of voice in AI search, branded search volume as a proxy for awareness, and direct traffic as a signal of accumulated recognition — alongside conversion, not instead of it.
